Paul Signac was born on 11 November 1863 in Paris and died on 15 August 1935. He was a French landscape painter, close to the libertarian movement, who gave birth to pointillism, along with the painter Seurat and Henri-Edmond Cross. He developed the divisionist technique.
This oil on canvas (size 93.5 x 75 cm) was painted in 1898. It shows a cape on the Ligurian Riviera, near Genoa, at Noli. Paul Signac hiked there from Saint-Tropez two years before completing the painting, and of his intentions, he wrote that he ‘wanted to bring every corner of the canvas to the absolute extreme in terms of colour’. The painting is in the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne, Germany.
